I have both GMC-500+ and GMC-800. GMC-800 consistently has a higher reading than GMC-500+ (about 5-10 CPM higher). Which device should I trust?

Both are correct. The CPM readings are the radiation raw data and they are tube dependent. Tubes may have some reading differences within range between them. Example, the GMC-600+ may have a higher sensitivity and the CPM reading may be three times higher than GMC-800 on same testing source. However, the final standard average unit reading, such as uSv/h, mR/h should be similar and in the device tolerance of spec.

Does this have the ability to detect alpha rad? If not, why?

It will not directly read alpha particles as it uses a GM tube vs. a pancake detector with a mica window. Alpha particles are stopped by the glass tube of a GM detector. It will although detect the daughter products from alpha sources which may be beta or gamma emitters. Americium used in ionizing smoke detectors is an alpha emitter. My GMC-800 jumps from about 20 CPM to over 300 when placed beside my Americium source.
