Maximum size page is 210mm(A4) with docking device. One side of the paper should be smaller than 210mm. 8 1/2 inch is almost the same as 210mm right? It means you can scan with this device. Ps. Hand scan mod doesn't matter how much size of paper you have. But you need photoshopping to make a one-piece image.

Can I edit and write to scanned documents?

I do editing on PC after transferring files. If scanned to PDF format, then you will need a program such as PDF Element or Adobe Photoshop to edit it. If scanned to JPG format, then you can edit it in a photo edit software like Picasso or Snag-it Editor.

Do I have to use an SD card in order to use this? Can it be connected directly to the computer to scan and save without using an SD card?

Yes, the SD card is required for use, as there is no way to scan directly to a computer with this model.
