When not using brake, the switch is open. As soon as you move the brake handle a 1/2" or so, then switch is on. Great for add on brake lights.

What size AWG wire is used? I would like to extend the electric cord to the controller.

There is a spring built into the brake lever body. The handle will return to the off position by itself. The cable will assist it, but even without a cable, it will still return to off.
