Out of the Abyss is a book that primarily serves as an introduction to the D&D Underdark setting. It contains a mix of mechanical information and story elements that require a thorough read-through and preparation from the GM. The book suffers from some poor layout, making it difficult to string the campaign together. However, the information contained within the book provides great spare parts for GMs to leverage in their own campaigns, and pairing them with adventures and sourcebooks from earlier editions gives seeds for hundreds of hours of Underdark adventures. The book is worth the investment for the information on the Underdark for 5e. The Demonlords are the primary menace in the book, and while they are not always well-implemented, they provide examples for the GM to create atmospherics and challenge the survival of a party of any level. The greatest value of this product is for GMs looking to create their own Underdark adventures or craft their own optimized version of the campaign contained within.
