Yes, you can tune the strings and play it like a 5 string banjo. However, note that the 5th string will be one octave lower than a standard tuned banjo with the short string.

Does it have a back or is it open?

It has a closed back. It is easy to install piezo based pickups either as clip ons or through the strap button.

Any suggestions on a hardshell case?

The banjo fits pretty much any standard size hardcase. Expect to pay around $60 US for a basic case up to $180 for Crossrock.

Bought for my husband as a gift. He loves it. Had the bridge professionally installed and intonated as he said well worth having it done. He said no to neck dive and that it handles well.
