Is this compatible with the diy mini 3018 cnc router kit?

There are a lot of 3018 CNCs out there, and not every one is compatible. If you look at the holder for your router motor, and it has 4 notches in it to hold the square laser body, and if your controller has a output labeled for 'laser' then it is a very simple upgrade.

What software works with the 3.5 watt laser?

It has nothing to do with software. If it has 5v pwm signal, it can control the laser. Please check if you connected it correctly.

Can this take 24 volts?

Be careful if you plan to try using a cheap 24VDC-to-12VDC adapter module to reduce a source 24VDC supply to 12VDC. SOME of these modules output a massively high-voltage spike when first connected to the 24VDC power source, and then quickly 'settle-down' to about 12VDC. I have seen several 24VDC-to-12VDC adapter modules cause catastrophic damage to the attached 12VDC equipment. After that, I started looking at the waveforms of all adapters with an oscilloscope before risking the 12VDC equipment.

It's probably that the pwm signal is not correctly connected or your pwm transmitter isn't working well.

OXLasers 450nm Focusable Blue Module for DIY CNC Engraving Cutting with PWM for CNC 3018

The OXLasers 3.5W 450nm Focusable Blue Laser Module is a decent option for DIY CNC engraving and cutting machines. It is well-built with a quiet fan and provides plenty of power when connected to a 12V power supply. However, it does not respond to PWM commands, which may be an issue for some users. The documentation is lacking and there is no website support. Customer support is marginally responsive. Overall, if you get one that responds to PWM, this laser module offers a nice package, but be aware of the limitations.
