No, not at all. You would be safe using either one. I use mineral spirits or other harsher solvents in mine.

Is there any way to remove the drain board on top to get to the lower section below to clean it out?

Sort of. You can remove the pump cover which gives you more access to the sump than the drain hole in the middle. You probably couldn’t scrub it well with a brush but you could spray it out with a hose half decently.

What type water based cleaning solution is recommended?

Extreme green water based parts cleaner can get at Menards or Home Depot.

Has anyone tried real solvent? Why is there a fire hazard sticker on it? Water based solvent does nothing.

I agree, water based is useless. I tried 3 different water based solvents and they all were horrible. My understanding is the real solvent will destroy the pump eventually. On another note, the unit is very sturdy, pumps well, has the brush attachment etc.

Can this product be transported full of its cleaning liquid?

Not sure of the specs for this one, I bought the less expensive model. That being said, I wouldn't.
