I mounted mind to the Transum of an inflatable boat the transom was made out of wood. The wheels themselves are really great I will get the job done but my installation was clearly different than yours I think it would be good for your boat but you have to use for wood backing plates. Use the wheels themselves as a template for the backing plates then just bolted all together shouldn't hurt your canoe even if it's loaded with gear.

3 1/2 inches. Wider would probably be better, but it helps that you can control the distance between them on the transom.

Where can I purchase a pair of replacement springs for these retractable wheels?

I googled how to contact Pactrade Maine and asked them through an email..if I get an answer I'll repost it here if I can..if I cannot then do as I did and google contact Pactrade Marine.

What size are the screws that come with it?

I didn't use them, but as I recall they were 2 inch long quarter inch bolts. Wouldn't work for me, so I ended up using #10 1&1/4 inch stainless wood screws to attach to transom with Dupont 4200. That's worked out great.

I've received this item. The mounting hardware is not functional, not long enough to pass through the wheel mounts. How should I mount this?

If you mean that the bolts are not long enough to go through you boat hull and the mounting plate, then you can purchase longer bolts at your local hardware store. The bolts that were supplied worked for me.
