Yes, the button pops out when closed. You can only lock the door by pushing the door from the inside when the door is closed. If you push the button and then shut the door, the button will pop out.

Can I install them with a two and a quarter backset?

No. The two standard backsets are 2 3/8" and 2 3/4". On occasion 5" but not often.

The lock has a privacy function similar to bathroom locks with a button that pops out when the door is closed. It is not possible to keep it unlocked without a key.
