Hi, no it can only be assembled according to the picture.

The whole island is a piece of junk. You have to completely assemble it and it doesn't go together very well. Sent it back.

No the spice rack does not have to be attached. Without it, the base is 29 but the top shelf is still 36. Hope that helps.

You'll have to go through Amazon LARGE order returns and schedule a date for the 3rd party vendor to pickup.

What are the dimensions of the lower cabinet and is the shelf removable? I would be attempting to hide my recycling bin in there...

The lower cabinet is 27 1/2 inches wide, 23 3/4 inches high and 14 inches front to back with the doors closed. The middle shelf is not adjustable but is easily removable. Actually you can just leave it out when assembling. Hope this help

Is there to get a replacement shelve

Unfortunately, this product fails miserably in all categories. Amazon cannot help you with any replacement pieces as this is technically purchased through a 3rd party. The manufacturer / sales is in NY and they are less than helpful. The number on the website is inaccurate and they do not return any email sent. Unless you're madly in love with this particular product, I'd cut and RUN...purchase a different kitchen island from a reputable company. Sorry for the bad news... :(
