What's the benefit of the square shaft?

The square shaft helps to keep the flat back of the tool rest placement stable.

What is the length of the handle?

The handle has a length of 14.17 inches (360mm).

What type of screw is used to attach the cutter and where do I get replacements?

Mine was torx. I took the original to the hardware store and got 5 more for when I drop them.
