I bought three of these for chrismas gifts for my three kids (9,9, and 7) for use with nexus 7 tablets. They have not used them yet, but I think these would be good for use by your 8 year old on an iPod mini.

They are compatible with my Iphone 4G if that helps, but they don't have the volume up and down buttons. By the way, these headphones were designed for the android operating system , there is a different version for the Apple products which is the MDR-ZX300IP and I think it does include the volume rocker, notice how the last two letters change (AP=Android Phone, IP=Ipad,Ipod,Iphone)
