No key required unless manually operated. The automated "key" to this is via a solenoid (aka actuator).

what is the difference 57623 and 57604?

The 57623 is a 3/4" FTP... 57604 is a 1" FTP that comes with 3/4" reducers... FTP = Female Pipe Taper... basically = threaded to receive the male pipe... Good Luck..!

Can this be used if the sprinkler heads are located higher than the valve?

The answer is no. Will it work yes, is it legal no. By code sprinkler valves are to be 12" higher in elevation than the highest sprinkler to prevent domestic water contamination. The only way to install legally at a lower elevation than the sprinkler heads is in conjuction with a annual tested and certified backflow device.

This description says underground and manual -- can this be used above ground and with a sprinkler timer/system? My old one is the same 57626

Mine is working fine overground (6" above ground) with an automatic sprinkler timer.

Can these be installed in an underground valve box?

Yes. Consideration is standing water in said box because of solenoid. If top half of valve assembly can be kept dry then OK.
