It sure can!! I use it for making iron gall ink- it turns the brown base a deep blue-black. Careful though, it'll stain anything you get it on once it's in solution.

Is this chelated iron?

No. It's just the sulfate salt of Iron-2. I found this material is not totally soluble in water.
