Yes, this syrup is significantly, if not enormously, thicker than the juice in jars of maraschino cherries. It also has a much stronger flavor. So you can use it, for example, to make a truly cherry-tasting cherry Coke.

Does this need to be refrigerated after opened?

No refrigeration after opened needed.

Can this be used to make maraschino cherries? We have a cherry tree and looking for easy ways to make them sweet.

I am not really sure. Those cherries are different than marrichino. But the syrup tastes exactly like the juice that in a marrichino jar. Just thin it out a little bit.
