Never was able to get ours to work either way, was rusted and had battery corrosion when we received it. Returned it for a refund.

No..I love to see colors change.

No... what loose plastic do you mean?

No, does not get hot at all. Son sleeps with it as a nightlight and does decent, considering it’s on batteries. There is an adapter for an outlet, thinking about looking into it. Great for the price, fun to watch!
