You can lay them on their sides as long as they are not overfilled with water. The holes that allow the correct humidity in and out of the tube are located on the blue cap on the top.

Do these replace the humidification device normally included with my humidor?

Yes, they can replace the normal foam device included with many new humidors and are two-way. They will add a little more moisture once level in the humidor is somewhat stabilized and remove a little humidity if new moist cigars are added or if you live in a normally humid area.

Yes, they work two ways just like Boveda packs but are refillable while the packs are one-time use.
