The canasta boxed set I have from Gibsons is made of cardboard. There are 104 cards + 2 spare jokers. Their statement of 54 is, therefore, correct as two packs of cards make one canasta set.

We have not had any problem with them. They handle & shuffle well. We try and always buy this make.

I would say that they are cardboard but coated with a very thin layer of 'plastic' which protects them from getting dirty and sticky. It does however make them a bit slippy to hold particularly when they’re very new.
