These can definitely be used to create the visual effect of oil pastels on your cakes using edible colors and media like fondant, modeling chocolate, cocoa butter, etc. If you're interested in using these with actual oil pastels for non-edible art, we haven't tried that but they have worked well with traditional media like acrylic and oil paints, so it's possible they would work with oil pastels too.

What is the difference between soft and firm tips?

The firm tips are harder than the soft tips, but they can still be used similarly by applying less pressure. They are great for cake modelling, although some people still prefer the traditional PME modelling tool.
