Generally a GM and 4 players is typically optimal. Fewer or more can be involved depending on the focus of the game and skill level of the GM. The more players the less time each is going to get in the spotlight. If you a game focusing on role playing fewer is better. More action oriented campaigns may work well with a larger group.
