What is the proper way to install the donut?

To install, first remove the sprinkler from the ground, then slip the sprinkler into the donut and screw the sprinkler back down. Depending on the level of the grass and dirt around your sprinkler, you may have to clear away some grass and/or dirt. Be prepared though, I had lawn tools and sprinkler tools in a bucket and carried it with me to each sprinkler.

What happens if I use a Weedwhacker want to break the plastic?

We use a weed wacker on these every week and have had no issues with them at all.

Can they be cut to fit a 2 3/4 rotor?

No, the opening is just shy of 2 inches.

How big is the center hole?

I do not have the exact diameter of the hole, but it is big enough to handle any popup sprinkler, in fact I believe it is too big, a standard popup sprinkler almost fits through it.
