What are the holes in the back corners for? Can straps be run through those, or are they for a different purpose?

There’s one large hole for the iPad camera, and 3 small ones in the other corners. I don’t think they could be used for straps, given the size and positioning.

Is this case heavy like most shell types?

No. Not really. I returned the first one I ordered from the same company, a swivel kind. Much too bulky. This is pretty much like my old one but better and has a pencil place.
