My husband is worried about rodents, has anyone had a problem with rodents?

If you have rodent problems a good way to take care of them is mix a box of jiffy cornbread mix with baking soda 50/50 and mix up and set out they will eat this and bloat and run off and die after a week.

Remove the blue 'door' and empty. You should be removing the 'door' to check for dampness level, once a week in summer and once every 2 weeks in winter. (If you get cold winters as we get in New England. You don’t want too much heat removed by opening too often.) You can add additional materials at that time too.

Is the tumble rod inside the barrel exposed to contents of barrel?

Yes, but it is a large barrel. We have at least a five gallon bucket worth of kitchen compost in it and it’s still well below the bar. Of course the compost will come in contact with it as you spin it, just don’t over fill.

It’s not air tight but I do not notice any smell from it when I walk by. When you open it you do smell it. We only put fruit, vegetables and garden cutting in it.

Do you have to have the faucet open always? Do you need a bucket underneath 100% of the time?

You don’t NEED a bucket. But I use some of the runoff for my outside plants. You need to keep the compost wet, so if you leave the drain open, it won’t be too wet when you want to use it.
