The heel is free from the brace, it only looks closed as there is fabric that continues from the brace to avoid any discomfort from the stiffness of the harder brace material.

Does this guard offer less protection than the guard with straps?

My son said it offers him most protection he has had from any other ankle device he has used. There are different sizes for this product which was a great bonus. Hope this helps.
