The tubes are in the signal path and a swap to Mullard or Russian tubes gives a different sound. The sound quality is excellent with zero pop, hiss, or static at max volume, and the vocals are richer, highs crisper, and lows deeper. The preamp is quiet, musical, and holds up well against more expensive phono preamps. The product is small, all-metal, and fits easily on a desktop while having some heft and weight. However, the VU meter serves no useful purpose in amplifying the phono or AUX sound input.
