No. The set includes one unit and three sensors.

If I understood the description correctly, the alarm will only sound if the temperature is above the set temperature for at least 10 minutes. Correct?

No. The alarm should sound when the temperature programmed is reached. It may sound directly +/- 1 degree above the settings.

What type of batteries and how many does it take?

AA's, but it's not recommended as it may not work properly.

If the alarm sounds and no one is home to hear it, how will you know there is a problem?

The alarm is similar to a really lame alarm clock and won't matter if it's on for a few minutes or all day. The best thing is to put the monitor in a place that's easy to see and look at it as a matter of habit. A freezer should be kept at zero F or below (-18C). It should take at least a day or more to get to +20F (-6C) and food is still safely frozen.
