Is there a lot of resistance when opening the door?

There is with the one I just put in. It seems as though the manufacturer heard recent reviews and tightened up the spring, or that units just vary.

I have it on a shower curtain and it is pretty strong retract. So I’d say yes.

Does it make the door heavier or harder to open?

No. I recommend not buying it. Mine broke can’t take off because the scores broke during installation. Did not even get to use once.
