Question : Will this test show aerobic bacteria ?
Answer : This test is specifically for E coli and other coliform bacteria
Question : Is this a good kit to use to test stream water directly from the stream? Or is there a better one for this purpose?
Answer : Should be okay for coliform bacteria sample from a stream.
Question : Please define "room temperature". If my room temperature is 60 degrees, how many hours will it take to get an accurate result?
Answer : "Normal Room Temperature" is approximately 65 to 75 degrees. Set your sample in a room and check it every 24 hours just to learn what happens. The instructions call for it to be read at 48 hours. I left mine after that and continued to check it each day. My first test I did it at about 3 days after we had added our bleach. It stayed yellow. The second test I waited until 7 days after we added bleach to sample the water. This second test was still yellow after 48 hours, however, I noticed it was just a little off color of the first sample so I waited longer and continued to check it each day. I think it was 4-5 days, I noticed that it did in fact turn very purple. Purple or orange indicates the presence of bacteria, but it was a low amount since it did not grow after 48 hours. Question : The instructions say to not pour the contents down the sink after use, so what is the proper way to dispose of the liquid after I boil them? Thanks
Answer : I took it to a spot away from the house in the woods, and dug a hole pored it in and covered it back up
Question : Can these be used to assess ocean water?
Answer : Yes, AquaVial E. Coli and Coliform test kits can be used to detect coliform bacteria in seawater.
Question : Where made..".
Answer : All AquaVial test kits are made in Canada.
Question : Will this tell you which bacteria it tested positive for?
Answer : The test is designed to detect coliform bacteria.if it is positive, the sample contains a type of Coliform bacteria, but will not tell you which species.
Question : What is the shelf life of these coliform tests? Expiration date of those shipped?
Answer : The shelf life is 2 years from date of manufacturing.
Question : Can this test be used to test dried possible surface fecal matter from possible sewer/septic backup?
Answer : You can. You will need a cotton swab, and freshly boiled water. Fill the vial with the freshly boiled and cooled water, take a cotton swab, wet it with the water in the vial, then rub it on the surfaces you want to sample. Then break the tip of the swab ( or cut it with a pair of scissors) so it can fit into the vial, cap the vial and shake it well. Let it incubate for 48 hours. If there is any viable coliform bacteria left in the dry matter, it will change color within 48 hours at room temperature (or much faster is the dried matter is really fecal matter).
Question : If it only turns one color to alert to two things how do you know if both are present?
Answer : If either E. Coli or Coliform is in the water it turns purple. You do not know which one, may be both. If you have it good idea to take a sample to a testing lab and find out what it is. E. Coli can be bad stuff, the other no as much but better safe than sorry.
