This gives an overall measurement of all minerals. It provides a single number of parts per millions. It cannot provide a break out of the different minerals. Your local water utility/supplier can often give you the analysis of your local water. That is, they can tell you the amount of manganese in your local water. Hope this helps.

Does it measure the water hardness?

Yes. The purpose of a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is to measure water hardness. The basic answer is the higher the number the harder the water. The lower the number the softer the water. The general rule of thumb is // 0 - 99 is ideal // 100 - 199 is good // 200 - 299 is average // 300 - 399 is marginal // 400+ is hazardous //. Like I said this is just general rule of thumb. The pen is actually pretty accurate for the price and has been effective for my shrimp tank.

batteries constantly drains and die even with product off! any one else with this issue or any ideas to fix?

I have not had a problem with the battery draining...it has the same batter from when I bought it...

All of our TDS Meter was calibrated by high accuracy equipment before selling and it doesn't need calibration when using. In this case, we don't suggest to reference to testing liquid to calibrate as there are so many uncertain factors affecting the result. Measure range of this water quality tester: TDS: 0 - 9990 ppm (parts per million), Conductivity: 0 - 9990µs/cm, Temperature: 32.0 - 212°F (0 - 99°C). Since TDS（total dissolved solids）indicates water purity, higher ppm(particles per million) figure reminds you to replace your filter.

This TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter provides an overall measurement of all minerals and hardness in water, with a range of 0-9990 ppm. It cannot provide a break-out of different minerals. Users should obtain a detailed analysis of their local water from their utility supplier. The pen has been effective in shrimp tanks and identifying when filters need changing. However, some customers have reported issues with battery drainage and the unit not turning on after a few months of use. The TDS meter is reasonably accurate and a great value for money. Its only downside is the lack of an auto-shutoff function.
