Cellophane, unlike plastic is made from a natural source, regenerated cellulose; whereas plastic is made from other materials including crude oil. Some plastics are recyclable, but cellophane is biodegradable, and, not recyclable.

Can this be used as a semipermeable membrane in an osmosis experiment?

Maybe it could. I can't guarantee. I have no clue how will it behave next to liquids.

This cellophane wrap is transparent enough for light to shine through and is not biodegradable. It cannot be used for making clear baby blocks for baby showers or for cooking due to its low heat resistance. It may be suitable for use as a semipermeable membrane in an osmosis experiment, but this is not guaranteed. Customers liked the gold color and transparency of the wrap, but found it too thin and easy to rip, making it difficult to work with. Overall, the cellophane wrap is suitable for wrapping baskets and trays but may not be ideal for other purposes.
