Can I put this directly into dirt/rock back yard?

Most fabric based fencing solutions and gates recommend installing in concrete footings. Some suggest using 1/2 inch copper H-type pipe sections for pavers. If the rock in your yard is solid, you could drill holes into it, otherwise, use concrete footings.
