How do you retract the lead?

To advance the lead: while holding the pencil by the lower rubberized grip, push down on the top (the eraser), then release. To retract the lead: push down on the top, hold it down while pushing the lead back in, then release.

Is this pencil for men or women?

Men, women or teens can safely use these pencils---but NO toddlers.

How long is the pencil?

About 5.5 inches, but it depends a little on how far out the eraser is. These are my favorite mechanical pencils!

Will the pencil use pentel .7 2H lead?

Since it takes 0.7mm HB lead, it should take any lead that measures 0.7mm. The only thing that matters is the 0.7mm diameter of the lead to fit a 0.7mm mechanical pencil.

Is this a comfortable pencil to write with for long durations?

I like it, it’s a fatter pencil, but I found the #5 five lead size was barely readable because the lead was so hard, so I switched to #7, much better, but the easy twist eraser is great as well, and lasts a long time. However you will still need to stretch your hand periodically and perhaps do a hand massage, especially if you have carpal tunnel issues! No one should be writing for 4 hours straight, if doing that I put a regular pencil into a foam holder that increases grip to 1 - 2 inches, which basically forces you not to grip hard, releasing the tension in your hand.

Does it come with refills?

It comes with about a half dozen spare leads in the barrel, but no separate refill container. I ordered an extra pack of refills with mine. I hope this helps!

Can using the eraser inadvertently advance the lead when pressing down on the eraser?

Not if you hold the pencil by the top (eraser) side of the pencil, which is the side you would normally hold when erasing, since holding the other side while erasing is awkward. If you do hold the pencil by the bottom (lead) side while erasing, it would be possible to advance the lead while erasing, but I have never had that happen.
