Yes, the clippers do open and close. Everything except the apron and seed packets are plastic.

The doll is not included in this set. Our dolls are made in China.

No, it doesn't...but I still HIGHLY recommend it! The pieces that are included are amazing! My granddaughter absolutely loves it.

Does the compass work?

Well, it depends on what you want it for? I bought this for my 5 year old granddaughter to play being a paleontologist with her dolls. It is a child's toy and she loves it. The compass does move and it does mostly point to due North, but if you wanted one that 'really' works, I would buy something else.
