It looks like there is a space between the mask and the portion that goes on your head. Can anyone verify that it offers complete face coverage?

No, there is not a gap between the shield and the head gear.

Does the clear shield flip up as well, or just the shade?

Actually, yes it does. All the Sellstrom DP4 shields flip up so that you can leave the helmet part on your head and have your face completely uncovered if you so choose. That same hinge has multiple different positions so you can adjust how close / at what angle the clear shield comes to your face.

will i be able to wear my dd ear protectors with this unit/ (decibel defense}? how long is shade 8 good for with flash UV sterilization\chelation?

Yes, you can wear ear protection. However the model I bought is only a shade 5.

The Sellstrom Plasma/Flame Cutting Safety Face Shield with Extended Chin Guard provides total protection for the face, including the lower face area. The ratchet headgear makes it easy to adjust the shield, and the clear anti-fog polycarbonate shield offers excellent visibility. The shield can also be easily flipped up and the black UV/IR visor can be attached if needed. While it doesn't come with a storage bag, this face shield is highly functional and well-made.
