I cant seem to get leverage to pop off the white plastic piece from the original. How do i remove this part?

The white piece can easily be pulled off with a pair of needlenose pliers. Attach screws part way into band before trying to align. Hold band tghtly to watch with left thumb and forefinger (if you are righthanded) to align screws easily. Once frist screw is in, the second one goes in with no problem.
