Why would I choose this over a cheaper 40,000 rpm Marathon?

RPMs are not a measure of the power of the tool, simply the speed a bit/burr will rotate at. At high speed materials like wood and plastic will burn, which makes them harder to carve detail into.

I currently use a Dremel with flex shaft and it kills my hands with the intense vibration. How is the vibration fatigue with the Foredom?

Are you satisfied with the foot pedal or do you wish you had the bench top variable speed box?

Love the foot pedal, I couldn't see using the speed box.

The Foredom K5240 Woodcarving Kit is an excellent tool for wood carving. It has a 1/6 HP motor, making it suitable for carving larger projects. The machine is not very loud and can be used in an apartment. The kit comes with three size collects, one being 1/4 inch, which is awesome. The Foredom K5240 Woodcarving Kit comes with a foot pedal which is more favorable than the box top variable speed control. If you are looking to buy a cheaper item, it may not be worth the money spent. The company has a great reputation, and their support is excellent.
