Question : Is this tree easy to grow?
Answer : Yes, it is very easy to grow.
Question : Can this be grown indoors?
Answer : Yes, it can be grown indoors.
Question : Is premium bonsai soil blend ok for this?
Answer : I recommend Fox Farms Ocean bottom soil. What I used until it has strong roots I pulled out of basic grow pot and reported into Bonsai soil. I did put a little bit of the fox farms soil mix with it. Just sprinkled in layers.
Question : What is the species and scientific name for this type of willow tree?
Answer : All true genetic willows (those not just using a descriptive name) are from the genus Salix. The tree looks like either a Salix babylonica or a Salix matsudana. The Matsudana species has a variety named 'Tortulosa'. Therefore the full name would be, Salix matsudana 'Tortulosa'. BUT then again, it could be another species of Willow that I have not mentioned here, if it is an actual Salix species. Can't tell by the tiny photo. Pretty tree though.
Question : Is it just the seeds?
Answer : It's a thick trunk cutting. They grow so fast!! You will be amazed. We guarantee them!
Question : How can I encourage more branch growth? Its been some months and all I see is long leaves no branches yet.
Answer : I purchased this in hopes of having a beautiful willow tree. At first, it was great - good roots, terrific growth (abundant leaves). However, after 3 months, first one and then the others (I received 3 branches) started to fail. When I pulled the first one, some of the roots had turned black and had a horrible smell. It wasn't too long before the other two followed. Keep in mind, I used the recommended soil for these bonsai and followed watering directions, etc. I don't know what to tell you about branch growth - I never got that far. Good luck with your plants.
Question : I lost my instructions. My plants are thriving and looks like they are ready to plant. Is there anyway to get another copy?
Answer : If you have an abundance of roots then plant it. DO NOT use Miracle Grow soil. Water daily for 7 days. If it continues to grow cut the water to every other day. After 3 weeks cut your water to perhaps 1 time a week.
Question : I'm giving this as a gift. How long upon arrival does it need to go into water? I don't want to get it too early and have it die before I give it.
Answer : Would recommend putting it in water as soon as you get it. Instead of a glass jar or cup, place it in a clear glass vase with a bow tied around to give as a gift. That way they can see roots sprouting.
Question : I need this gift wrapped and no receipt
Answer : Contact the company, they might, but what you get is three cuttings (sticks) with a damp paper towel wrapped around the end. Doesn't look like much until soaked in water for a few weeks and then planted.
Question : Can this grow solely in water?
Answer : I have never seen willows grown in just water. I have been in the hobby for over 30 years. But, they do need to be well watered. Best of luck.
Question : I planted mine in November and it's now March, they have grown but it's cold outside. Can I put them outside to get some air or will the cold kill them?
Answer : I wouldn't put outside until the last frost. I have left mine outside at no less than 40° and they are fine. Frost will kill.
Question : What kind of soil should I put my bonsai in? Will any pot do or should it be a bonsai pot? Should I also put some real moss in around the trunk?
Answer : I also use ocean forest soil. I received four cuttings. Two have grown to about 3 feet tall and two are about a foot tall. I received them about 3 months ago. One wasn't doing well so I cleaned up the roots and tried rooting used bioplex and it came back fast.
