NO ... light weight cutting of soft metal in tight areas... very sharp cutter

How do I know which crimp size?

The handle is too short and there is not enough leverage to get a good crimping.

Will this easily crimp 8 gauge butt connectors?

I have not tried the crimping feature yet. The tool says it will crimp up to 10 gauge, but looks like it would work on 8 gauge. I bought the tool to cut small machine screws. Unfortunately, I had to re-tap the 10-32 threads in the tool. The other screw sizes were fine.

Can this cut bass guitar strings?

It could, but it would be hard, better using a regular pair of wire cutters.

The final picture shows a screw/bolt but I couldn't get it to cut. Any tips?

These are not bolt cutters and they're only capable of cutting screws or bolts small enough to fit in the small gauge cutting holes. This tool does what it was designed to do, very well.

I don't understand the insuland non-insul labels: can someone describe the crimp openings for different sizes and insul/non-insul?

Insulated connectors are thicker because they've got a layer of plastic on top.
