Thin pads are attached to edge of boards. They're adequate. We have the slide together ones also, but not too impressive, they break super easy now. The masterline boards are far superior. Pricier, but worth the cost. Beware, from blue color up they are get progressively harder to break. Have students start with brighter colors first and work their way up to the darker boards. You want to avoid injury especially with over ambitious young students. Hope this helps.

How much pressure is required to break each board

I have got yellow and black boards. 9 year old kids easily break the yellow one. The black board requires as much pressure as a 2-inch wooden board.
