Those are just the wires that keep the keys hanging in the box. They can be removed if you want.

Are batteries easy to install?

Wonder of wonders, there are no batteries in this device. It's all mechanical operation. The instructions are very well written, simple to understand, and there are two well chosen pictures to make everything clear.

Is it really waterproof?

Yes-mine hangs on a gate outside in the elements. Completely waterproof.

How do you change the combination code?

When you open it there is a small lever inside you push it to the opposite of were it's at then set your code in and push it back to the position again it should be set after that.

Is there a magnet on the back of the device or does it come with screws to mount on a wall?

The unit I received has mounting holes inside through the back for securely mounting to a strong wall. I don't think magnets would work anyway. You don't want the housing to be removable!
