What is the rated weight for this?

I'm not sure what the rated weight for this is, but I would be hesitant to put a lot of weight on it. We use it as a book display.

Can connect the slate walls together or will there be a gap in between each one?

Yes you can connect them. We use them in our Chiropractic Physical Therapy treatment floor. The hooks that hold items are great also. We have not secured the hooks (handles) that hold items tightly into the grooves, because we now can easily slide or move them how wish to with ease. And the black color looks nice. Many compliments from it. Really happy with it.

Can it be trimmed down neatly and easily to fit a smaller area?

I personally did not trim mine down, however it has a trim that attaches on all sides. So if you decided to cut it to fit your space, the trim efficiently covers the rough edges.
