Question : What is the thickness of the bamboo shield?
Answer : The thickness of the bamboo shield is 60 mil.
Question : Where is the bamboo shield manufactured?
Answer : The bamboo shield is made in the USA.
Question : What is the purpose of the bamboo shield?
Answer : The bamboo shield is a water barrier that prevents the bamboo from spreading uncontrollably.
Question : What is the minimum in-soil depth I need to block bamboo from spreading?
Answer : Bamboo typically travels in the first 14” of soil for most species in normal conditions. The Bamboo Shield is sold in 24”, 30”, and 36” depths. A general guide is that 24” is for cold climates (zones 5-6), 30” is for warm climates (zones 6-8), and 36” is for hot climates (zones 8+).
Question : Will this work on bamboo that has already spread?
Answer : The Bamboo Shield will prevent future rhizomes from spreading but any viable rhizomes outside the barrier may continue to spread.
Question : My neighbors planted 6 palm trees by the fence. Will this prevent roots from destroying my concrete slab?
Answer : Palm trees don’t rhizome out like bamboo. However, if the palm in question is very near to your slab, the bamboo shield would work well since the palm tree roots are thin and the shield is very thick.
Question : Do I need the clamp, or can I just overlap it by a couple feet?
Answer : When abutting or overlapping the pieces together, all openings need to be sealed, otherwise, roots will find their way through any opening and defeat the purpose of the barrier.
Question : Product info contradicts color-coded map showing the necessity for 80-100 mls in California. Can I use 60 ml?
Answer : This product is meant to block “running” varieties of bamboo rhizomes from spreading and has nothing to do with cold weather. If you have concerns about cold temperatures, choose a different, more cold-tolerant variety of bamboo.
Question : Could this be cut in half if I only need a 6" deep barrier?
Answer : Yes, the material can be cut with a utility knife. However, it is recommended to use a deeper depth than 6" to control bamboo.
Question : Will the weeder type with a whipping string from the gardener break it?
Answer : While a weed eater may degrade the appearance of Bamboo Shield, it should cause little to no damage to the integrity of the barrier. It is made from HDPE plastic and will scratch with repetitive abuse from a weed eater.
Question : If we are installing the barrier and building a new fence, is it best to put the fence inside the barrier, or the barrier inside the fence?
Answer : It is best to install the barrier inside the fence.
Question : Why must the Bamboo Shield be installed on an angle with shiny side facing bamboo?
Answer : Bamboo Shield is a diversionary pest control device. The slight angle encourages growth upward, discourages downwards rhizome expansion, and helps identify and prune rhizomes trying to grow over the top of the barrier.
