I have used the color after I have opened the bottle ... I think it's still fine, although I wonder if it's not as vibrant... make sure you put the cap on tight.

Is this color really red or more of a brown?

It's dark brown with a red base. It's not overpowering at all. I've been using it for years. I mix it with a darker nuetral color half and half and it just gives lots of warmth. It's gorgeous!!!
