The stakes are made out of a hard, durable plastic. There is a "Starter Spike" that comes with the kit that is made out of metal. For harder soil, the Starter Spike is used to create a pilot hole that makes it easier to drive the plastic spikes into the ground. Regardless, spikes will not break, so if ones does break, please inform the manufacturer (Newstripe) so that they can make sure you are taken care of.
