Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question : What kind of microcontrollers is this shield compatible with?
Answer : This shield is plug-in compatible with Arduino Uno/Mega/Leonardo and easy wiring for any 1.8-5V microcontroller like ESP8266, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi if wired externally.
  • Question : What network connection types are supported?
    Answer : This shield supports LTE CAT-M1 and NB-IoT, and SIM7000C, SIM7000E, and SIM7000G versions additionally support 2G (GSM/GPRS) and 2.5G (EDGE).
  • Question : Does this kit include everything needed for operation?
Answer : No, this kit does not include a 3.7V LiPo battery or SIM card, which are required for proper operation. Stacking female headers require basic soldering.
  • Question : Does the "g" in sim7000g stand for "global"? Will this work in the United States, Canada, and China?
Answer : Yes, the "G" stands for "global". Please refer to the wiki page for compatibility in your region: https://github.com/botletics/SIM7000-LTE-Shield/wiki/Board-Version
  • Question : Where can I find the right type of battery?
Answer : You can get LiPo batteries with the proper polarity from Adafruit or Sparkfun. Make sure the JST connector matches and the red wire is on the left side of the connector.
  • Question : Is the antenna water resistant?
Answer : Yes, the antenna itself is a flexible antenna (FPC type).
  • Question : Does it work with a RedBoard?
Answer : Yes, the SIM7000 shield should work with any Arduino compatible board, including the Sparkfun RedBoard.
  • Question : My SIMCOM 7600A stopped working with AT&T in Feb 2022. Will SIM7000 work with AT&T after Feb 2022?
Answer : The SIM7000 should work with AT&T for the foreseeable future.
  • Question : Can I substitute a robust 3.7V DC power supply for the LiPo battery?
Answer : Yes, you can use a 3.7V DC power supply instead of a LiPo battery. However, do not connect the 5V pin on the shield as it will try to charge the power supply.
  • Question : Could you tell me if this chip supports B28 LTE band?
Answer : The SIM7000G supports B28 LTE band with LTE CAT-M/NB-IoT. Please note that B28 is used by Telstra in Australia.
  • Question : Will this work with a Tello 3 in 1 GSM SIM card that claims 4G LTE/5G coast-to-coast wireless coverage?
Answer : The SIM7000 requires a SIM card that supports LTE CAT-M or NB-IoT. The compatibility with the Tello SIM card is not clearly listed in their description.
  • Question : Is there any visual or functional change to the SIM7000A shield when put in low power mode?
Answer : There will be no visual change, but when you enable low power mode (AT+CSCLK=1), it enters lower power consumption. For more information, please refer to the wiki: https://github.com/botletics/SIM7000-LTE-Shield/wiki/Current-Consumption#sleep-mod

Botletics Editorial Review

The SIM7000 LTE CAT-M1 NB-IoT board is a viable option for Internet of Things (IoT) projects. It can connect to different devices such as Arduino boards, and its wiki is comprehensive but may require some time to navigate. However, the board is very suitable for the US market; the SIM7000A version is best for the US. Additionally, it has a GPS tracking feature, a temperature sensor, and an LTE antenna that can work well under certain conditions. It has problems working under specific areas due to the reception, and some tinkering such as solder points, battery supply polarity, software tweaking and GPS antenna upgrading may need to be done. Nonetheless, the Botletics technical support is handy and helpful. The SIM card should support LTE CAT-M or NB-IoT to function correctly with the board. The Hologram sim card is suitable for the US. The board can work well if the suitable SIM card and chip are set up correctly.

Pros

  • Works well with Arduino boards
  • Comprehensive wiki page
  • GPS tracking and temperature sensor
  • Technical support is useful

Cons

  • Needs specific battery
  • Reception is not suitable for some areas
  • Hardware tweaking required
  • Higher in price
  • Some reviewers have reported reliability issues
