If adjusted to the same depth each time and using the same volume of grounds, it can be used in place of a tamper for consistency.

Not familiar with the Breville 50mm basket, but I had a machine shop shave off 2mm from the 51mm distributor to fit a LaPavoni 49mm basket.

How do I know what size I need?

There are generally 2 sizes, 58 and 54-53. Measure the inside of your portafilter to determine the size you need.
