Jorge, no it is not die cast. It is plastic.

Does it actually transform in one piece or is it a 'disassemble then reassemble in a different configuration' thing?

It transforms in one piece, no partsforming.

Other than the cockpit figure, is any paint required? Also, how tall is robot mode?

Robot mode is about 7.5 inches tall. The molded plastic colors and decals/stickers do a really good job with no paint at all. But there are some small bits that could be painted. Wheels, cockpit interior, air intakes, etc...

Is building this model similar to how you build gundam gunplas particuarly HG and MG?

I do not know about HG or MG models. But the models building is all done without using any kind of glue. It is built up of perfectly fitting parts which click when pushed into place. My son enjoyed it a lot.

The Bandai Variable Action Hi-Spec VF-1S Roy Focker Special is a detailed and highly articulated transformable mecha model that comes with many accessories, including water slide decals. It is built up of perfectly fitting friction joints and requires no glue. However, the kit is challenging to assemble, and some parts are fragile or prone to falling off. Some customers have had difficulty transforming it from Battroid to Fighter mode or Gearwalk mode, and others are dissatisfied with the design of the full transformation. The model is best suited for display only as it is fragile. Overall, it is a great model with fantastic detail, but it may not be suitable for beginners.
