I bought two for my grandkids, ages 7 and 10 for Christmas. We took them to the beach today to try them out. One of them will not detect ANYTHING. The other would detect my car keys laying on top of the sand if the detector was slowly placed a half inch above the keys. The kids were so disappointed. Granny struck out on gifts this year. Don't buy these crappy things.

Is this small enough for my 4yr old to use?

Gave to my 5 yr old grandson and he just loves it!!!!

How deep can it read?

When it did work it would read about a foot. But it stopped working two days later.

Does it work like a real one?

It picks up different products, u may find a lot of junk metal with it but does work well for a kid. I wouldn't recommend for a professional.
