Sure can just place it inside a pillow case and tie the top to keep it inside while in the washer/dryer

The poltergeist is loose however Luigi's hands are sewn to his face. So unless you want to cut the thread holding his hands on the answer is no. Hope that helps.

Has anyone successfully removed the backpack without any damge? My son wants to be able to put it on his current Luigi plush.

I did indeed a couple years when I bought it for the same reason. I had to do it very carefully and it works. so good luck

The legs extend when you pick him up.

Is there anyway to snip the hands off of Luigi’s face?

If you tried to you would surely damage both his face and hands, they are tightly sewn unfortunately.
