One of the 5 star reviews shows the axe head and handle separated. Is that supposed to be like that?

The separation most likely happened due to hitting concrete in full swing, multiple times. Despite this, the axe did not break and was given a five star review, which we believe speaks to its durability.

Would this be worth while to add to my Wildfire kit?

In short, YES, really worth while. The MAX was born out of the need for a compact tool kit to fight wildfires and was designed to meet US Forest Service requirements. Firefighters carry personal gear bags that contain water, rations, sleeping bag, and hand tools such as a Pulaski, shovel, or McLeod (all included with The MAX). The McLeod in particular is heavily used for raking firelines and the hoe-like blade on the other side is for cutting branches, roots and sod. With The MAX you get all the heavy-duty tools you need in a relatively small package weighing 12.5 lbs.

How is the shovel going to get the mud or snow under my truck with that axe blade sticking up?

If you don’t have roughly 5” - 6” of clearance for the shovel then I would probably use the hoe attachment laying the tool on its side. Everything is a trade-off, so if one only needs a shovel then no need to buy a multipurpose tool like this.

How much does the whole kit weigh? Looking at this for my summer horse packing trips to clear trails for the forest service.
